Back from Christmas with stuff

OK, Christmas was pretty good. I was blessed with a great many cool gifts from everyone, and I hope I’ve thanked them all.

One cool thing I got was a new digital camera, so hopefully I’ll post more pictures on here.

I’ve recently began to see the usefulness of RSS feeds, and there’s no program quite like NewsFire. It’s really changed the way I think about accessing information from the Web sites I visit most frequently. I highly recommend it.

Return from the abyss

OK, I’m done. Completely finished for the semester, save a few housekeeping things. That means one semester to go before they release me into the wild. Not sure how I feel about that. I’ll probably be posting more assignments and perhaps a reflection on the completion of yet another academic semester. My fingers are crossed for some of these classes…

Honors Science class project

Means to End

Next, we have my Honors Earth Science class project. During the class, we studied some interesting things. The two big ones were Coal and Cod. That’s right, a flammable rock and a fish. It was a lot more interesting than it sounds. It is amazing the influence coal has had on the development of modern society. Without coal, there would be no industrial revolution, no mass transit, and probably less electricity. We don’t think much about coal, but even today almost all of the electricity in the United States is produced by burning coal.

Cod may seem even more out of place. But in reality, the history of the fisheries in the Northeast is an interesting one. Basically, back in the day the oceans provided a seemingly unlimited supply of cod, but as technology improved and the number of fisherman fighting for a share of the catch increased, we nearly fished cod into extinction. Cod fishing was banned, and the cod fishing industry crumbled, leaving thousands out of work. It is interesting how mother nature takes her revenge.

Anyway, the final project was supposed to be a creative project. So I thought I would be very cliché and ask everyone in the class to submit a haiku or two about the subjects we studied this semester, and then I would package them into a nice little book that I would give to everyone in the class. The book is titled, “Means To End,” because humanity has always been the means to its own end, plus it was the last thing I had to do before the end of the semester. It worked out pretty well, and you can download a pdf of that, too, right here.

Magazine class project

Splashed Ink

I told you I’d post some of my class projects, so here’s the first one. It’s for my magazine design class. My partner, Stephanie, and I worked the whole semester to put this together. It’s an art and literary magazine, titled “Splashed Ink.” While the rest of the class chose to produce more traditional magazines with quick-hit-type content, our magazine is aimed at people who would pick up the magazine with the intention of reading all of the content. Download a pdf version here.

Flickr and del.icio.us now linked

If you haven’t noticed already my Flickr account and my del.icio.us account are now linked in my navigation bar.

If you’ve been paying attention, the links disappeared recently when I upgraded to Wordpress 1.2.1. It was probably for the best, however, because it seemed like half of the links didn’t work or went to something that I wasn’t really ready for the world to see.

Flickr has become my online photoblog type thing of choice, so you can look there for photos, as I’ll slowly be uploading a bunch of them to it. I found a really handy iPhoto Flickr plugin that makes uploading photos to the internet all that much more seemless. Ah, technology.

Oh, and I will be posting some of my final projects, soon. Just keep waiting. I know you’re on the edges of your seats.

UPDATE: They’re linked again.
