Shakedown on Elk Court

Finished reading “The Lord of the Rings”

Lord of the Rings

I managed to read all three books, and “The Hobbit” to boot. I was never really introduced to Tolkein until the film trilogy was released. It always seemed — and this is only my fault — tied to all that Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering stuff. But I guess if I would have gotten off my lazy 13-year-old ass and actually looked into it, I would have found my assumption to be far from the truth. I guess I was too busy reading Michael Chrichton books.

But maybe I wouldn’t have appreciated it then anyway. All I can say is, I appreciate it very much now. Perhaps I’m one of the great number of fans who only read the books after seeing the films, but I’m OK with that. Tolkein’s accomplishment is truly amazing. The book plods through an amazingly intricate and detailed story at a pace that wouldn’t fly in most books. But it’s the detail and emotion attached to every character, place and event that makes Middle Earth really come off the page.

People have asked me who my favorite character is. That’s hard to say. Despite how good of a character Frodo is, I can’t call him my favorite. Of that path in the book, Sam is the true noble character. He never falters, never gives up, when Frodo would have given up any number of times. Frodo may be the bearer of the ring, but Sam is the bearer of Frodo.

Of all the characters in the book, I probably like Gimli the best. He’s always lighthearted, always couragous and always speaks his mind.

I needed a break from Tolkein after finishing that giant volume (I’m reading “Cold Mountian” currently) but I picked up a copy of “The Silmarillion” at a book shop and I’m going to start on it soon. Michelle and I rewatched the film trilogy again — all 13 hours or so — and it put the Middle Earth interest back in my head.

I’ve got a shelf full of books now that I want to read, and hopefully I’ll have time to do so once I get caught up with other stuff. (Like blogging!)

I would like to say, firstly, thank you for finally updating. Also, I posed for pictures with the Hulk gloves that I, sadly, don’t see in your collection.

It’s true. They did get me through adolescence. And with a wicked mean streak, to boot.
