Capote (2005)

Philip Seymour Hoffman stars as Truman Capote in the eponymous film about the writing of “In Cold Blood.”

“Capote” is what I like to call a “face movie.” That means that the filmmakers try to create dramatic impact by filming really close to people’s faces for extended amounts of time. That being said, the effect does work. It really allows the actors to be subtle and precise. Now, that being said, the movie doesn’t make you like Truman Capote. Sure, Hoffman does an incredible job portraying him. At least, I think. I honestly don’t know that much about Capote. But he uses two men whose lives hang in the balance, and in the end he just wants them to be executed so he can have an ending for his book, “In Cold Blood.”

Overall, it’s an impressive piece of film, but it doesn’t overwhelm. It doesn’t break any new ground, really. It barely touches on the reasons for the brutal killings that the book describes.

I’m glad I saw the movie, but I could have waited to see it at a second run theatre.

I just saw it last night and thought I remembered you posting about it. Yeah, the movie sure doesn’t make you like Capote. But I thought it was good…I’m glad that I rented it for free, although I think I would have paid to see it at some point.

Hope things are well in Bend. Lots of snow here in Muncie, and Stephen’s sick.
