North and west

Down from column
Looking down from the Astoria Column, we spied Michelle and Evelyn looking back up at us.

OK, here’s the way it happened last week. (See my brother’s post for another perspective.)

So in honor of my brother and Michelle’s sister’s visit to our humble state of Oregon, we decided to plan a short trip to Astoria, which is a bit north and a bit east of Bend. (Check out this awesome photoset on Flickr for illustrations.) It was interesting. Until 5 p.m., that is. Then there was nothing. It was like a ghost town. Plus the downtown area was kind of hokey anyway. The best thing we found was this place called Deals Only. I found some sweet stuff:

1. A pack of Time Zero film that was 2 years expired. But it was only a buck.

2. A double-barrelled shotgun lighter that produces 2 flames. Only two bucks.

3. A pack of one dozen Orange-Red Crayola crayons. There had to be 50 boxes, but no other color. Forty-nine cents.

Stuff we didn’t buy, but thought was awesome, kind of:

  • Gorilla Munch organic cereal. Don’t ask, because I don’t know.
  • About 40 off-brand 12-inch G.I. Joe dolls. You know, the ones that have real clothes. All of the soldiers were Black. As in Brothers.
  • Possibly every copy of WWF Smack Down 2 for PS2 ever made. Seriously, there had to be about 100. They had no other video games.

But other than that store, we went to a nifty maritime museum, saw the rebuilt Fort Clatsop, and climbed to the top of the Astoria Column. Oh, and drove by the Goonies house.

On the way back to Bend, we visited Multnomah Falls, which was pretty rad. That’s one damn tall waterfall.

On Monday, we dragged our visitors to Smith Rock, and they felt the wrath. We walked up and down the damn thing. Twice. (Here, check out the Flickr set of that as well.) Smith Rock was familiar to Michelle and I, but I think Corey and Evelyn were impressed. I think.

The rest of the week was much more mellow, as Michelle and I had to work. But Corey and I did plenty of much needed hanging out and I was able to get my Vice City fix as well, because the bro brought the PS2.

Anyway, that’s the way it was. I’ve given you the highlights. All the rest belongs to us.
