Why are there so many versions of Bodoni? Seriously.

“The Road” by Cormac McCarthy

The RoadThis is officially the first book I’ve read in 2007. (Yes, I’m still working on “Tropic of Cancer.”) I actually finished it last week and created a draft of this post but just now got around to finishing it. I guess I was in a post-apocalyptic mood after finishing this dark and delightful fictional travelogue. I mean, what would all the blogs matter in the world when there’s no juice to run the servers or personal computers? Not much. Actually, they don’t mean that much these days anyway.

Blogs are an intersting cultural metric, but nothing more. Sure, “anyone” can start a blog these days. But “anyone” does not include my mother. Heck, it doesn’t even include my girlfriend, and she’s only two years older than I am. (Actually, she started one once and decided it was pointless. And she’s probably right.)

Back to “The Road.” I’d never read a McCarthy book prior to this one. But I liked it quite a bit. It’s nice to read science fiction written by someone respected outside of the science fiction community. It’s kind of like reading Jack London science fiction.

Anyway, check it out.

By the way, I’ve set up a new page for this year’s reading project. I’ve retitled it Open Books. I chose not to set a number goal because I’ve picked a few rather difficult books this year and I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment. Check out the list if you want. Make suggestions, please.

The last labyrinth of Scotland

Pan’s Labyrinth

A still from “Pan’s Labyrinth,” directed by Guillermo del Toro.

I forgot to mention that Michelle and I did a double feature at Pilot Butte last weekend. We say “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Las Kind of Scotland,” both of which I would highly recommend. But I would recommend “Pan’s Labyrinth” higher if you asked, because it was one of the most visually stunning and downright engaging films I’ve seen in a long time. And it was Spanish!

“The Last King of Scotland” was a bit like “Ray.” There was one really great performance (Forest Whitaker) stuck in an otherwise mediocre movie. But it was kind of violent and frightening, all the more so because it was based on actual events. What a nut.

Anyway, if you want to see either of these films, I would recommend splitting them up over at least two days. Back to back, I started to feel a bit like Alex from “A Clockwork Orange,” strapped to a chair with my eyes pinned open, forced to watch a lot of the old Ultraviolence in order to change my behavior. And indeed I did feel a bit squeamish after “Last King,” but that was mainly due to one particularly violent act I was forced to witness. Pair either of these with a nice romantic comedy to lighten the load is all I’m saying.

Twilight Princess complete

For those of you still on the quest, I won’t go into details, but I finished “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” tonight. I haven’t finished all of the crazy sidequests. Not sure if I ever will. There are a lot of them. But there was 48 hours worth of main quest as well.

This game builds on pretty much everything that was good about the last several Zelda games. (Unless of course your really like the cell shading from Wind Waker.) It’s epic. Hyrule is massive and detailed down to unique patches of bushes and grass all over the place. Man, this game must have taken forever.

There are a few weaknesses. I’m well aware of the fact that the Wii will never look as good as the 360 or the PS3, but I’m almost certain that developers can do better than this. I’m sure it’s mostly because TP was developed with the GameCube in mind. But still.

If you have a Wii and don’t have Twilight Princess, I have to ask you why. It’s simply on of the best adventure/RPG games I’ve ever played.

Re-upped

I’ve just upgraded the ‘S to Wordpres 2.1, so be patient if things go wonky. There are a few features that are missing due to some plugin compatibility issues, but I don’t think it will take long for those things to work themselves out.

Things at work are a little crazy lately, so postings my be fewer in the coming weeks. But don’t worry. I want to keep my readers happy. Both of you.
