I read this book on the recommendation of several people. Now, I’ll be the first to admit, I’m a huge fan of what Crichton did with “Jurassic Park.” He made an engrossing techno-thriller seem like it was full of important ideas. (In truth, Crichton just picks trendy ideas. But try telling that to an 11-year-old nerdy kid from the Indiana.) The central trendy idea in “Prey” is that humans are able to weild technology that could ultimately destroy them. Yes, I’m still talking about “Prey,” not “Jurassic Park.” Unfortunately, the bulk of the “info” in the novel feels like Crichton regurgitating an article he read in Scientific American after 3 martinis. The plot and story feel like a half-assed paper-maché skin thrown over the aforementioned awkward skeleton of a premise. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. It made for an excellent read on a recent long flight across the country. But high literature it is not, and it doesn’t reach even as high as some of Crichton’s other novels.
What’s his [next] one supposed to be about? Monkeys or something?
This entry is part of the Open Books project I’m doing.
