Headphoneicide

For some reason, I’ve gone from three pairs of headphones to zero in less than a week.

Exhibit A: I wake up one morning to find one of my cats has chewed one of my Sony MDR-J10 earpieces completely off. So now I have one headphone. It still plays sound.

Exhibit B: I walk into work one day to find my ancient pair of Sony over-ear headphones with one cup snapped off. Awesome. (I later found out who did it. But I wasn’t angry. They were pretty old.)

Exhibit C: I can’t find my damn Apple In-Ear headphones frickin’ anywhere. I hope I didn’t leave them on a plane or something.

Closing arguments: If money weren’t an issue, I’d own dozens, nay scores of headphones. There’s just something about each type. I’d have the classic iPod earbuds for casual listening. Then I’d have the In-Ear buds for when I need to block out other sounds. But a pair of those studio style cups from Sony would be nice, too. Of course, I’ve got to have a pair of the cheap “stable earclip” style phones for running. (I’ve already replaced my MDR-J10s.) I’d really like to pick up a pair of old-skool Walkman phones, you know, the ones with the metal strip that wraps around your head and the orange spongey speakers. Anyway, you get the point.

The point of this entry is really to ask people what are some good phones to replace the ones I’ve lost. (Aside from the MDR-J10s.) Not too expensive, but no Cobys either.

OK, this episode of “Miami Vice” is getting pretty good, so I’m going to end this thing here.

Oh, and Fred Meyer is selling copies of “Shaun of the Dead” for $8, among other titles. Can’t beat that.

I’ve got a recommendation. For when you’re at home and don’t care how ridiculous you look, the Philips SBC HP170 is a nice pair of closed-ear headphones. They block and out other sound well, they’re comfortable and light weight, and they sound great. I admit that I’m not an audiophile, but I’ve done radio studio work, and I couldn’t tell the difference between these and the Sony headsets in the studio.

The best part? I got them for about $20, and I’m sure you can find them cheaper now.

I also used them to keep my ears warm when listening to an iPod on the way to class in college. :)

Other than that, I have a pair of Sony wrap-arounds and the ear buds that came with my iPod to use when I’m out walking or such.

I don’t have any recommendations, but I just wanted to say hi! On a related note, I got a new iPod this week (a 4GB red nano) and it’s fantastic. Hope you and Michelle are doing well.
